Getting started

What chud is, how to try it without an account, and where everything lives.

chud is a general-purpose AI assistant. It is for writing, planning, arguing, drafting, debugging and thinking out loud — and for studying, which is the deepest thing it does rather than the only thing it does. One application, several surfaces: a chat, a study workspace, a research tool, an image generator, and a few places to keep work.

chud is in beta

This documentation describes what is built today, not what is planned. Where something is limited, gated, partly finished, or where the config disagrees with the gate, it is written down as such rather than left out. Several passages below exist only to record a limit that could have been quietly omitted.

Trying it without an account#

The route /try is guest mode. There is no sign-in. Ask up to 4 questions free, no account. chud keeps your guest chat only in this browser. Each message is still sent to the model provider to get an answer.

  • A guest session ends after 4 assistant replies. After that the composer is replaced by a sign-up prompt; the conversation above it stays readable.
  • A guest message is capped at 2,000 characters. Signed in, a message is capped at 12,000.
  • The 4-reply session cap is not the only limit. The server can also decline a guest turn with a daily cap, and that number is set and enforced server-side rather than in the page — so the honest answer is that guest mode has a daily ceiling as well, not just a per-session one.
  • If you create an account from that screen, the guest transcript is imported into a real chat in your history and you land inside it.

Signing in and first run#

Signing in from the landing page takes you to /m/chat. On a first run you pass through onboarding at /m/onboard, which collects a profile and the classes you are taking. That profile is what personalisation later reads from — you can change all of it afterwards in Settings.

The surfaces#

Everything inside the product lives under /m. The drawer only lists destinations your plan includes, so this table is the full map rather than what you will personally see.

Finding these docs from inside the app#

These pages used to be linked from the marketing footer and nowhere else, which meant a signed-in user could not reach them at all. There are now real routes in, and the ones that matter are the contextual ones — a limit or an error links to the page that explains that limit or that error, rather than dropping you at the front door of a manual.

  • Settings, under Help and about — on desktop and on the mobile Settings screen.
  • The account menu behind the chud wordmark, above Get help.
  • The You tab, in the settings list.
  • Cmd K / Ctrl K — search for docs, or for tokens and limits to land on Plans and credits directly.
  • The report-a-problem form, which asks you to check here first because most tickets are questions these pages already answer.
  • Run out of tokens and the sheet links to Top-ups. Hit a plan gate and it links to the page for that feature. Attach a file that is rejected and the error links to the supported-file list.

Keyboard#

Cmd K / Ctrl K
Opens the command palette anywhere in the app. On these pages it opens the docs search instead.
/
Also opens docs search, when the focus is not already in a text field.
Arrow keys, Enter, Escape
Move through results, open one, dismiss.

Installing it#

chud ships a web app manifest and a service worker, so a browser that supports installation can add it to a home screen or dock and open it without browser chrome. There is no published App Store or Play Store listing.
